Defining Cultureless
Old word; new meaning.
When scouring the net for a suitable definition for the Cultureless, in adjective and noun form, results failed to hit the mark with many batting backwards between the legs - eye watering ouchiness!
So let’s start with what it isn’t: Uncultured (Miriam-Webster: lacking in education, taste, or refinement)
Most online references Heathrow runway signal to “uncultured” for the serious meaning of Cultureless. Wikipedia says Cultureless is to be: devoid of culture. Wordnik clearly states: uncultured. Webster's 1913 Dictionary claims: Having no culture. While the The Oxford English Dictionary goes historical and poetical: finding it first used in 1824 by poet Bernard Barton in “Poetry of the Flowers”. When writing about vetches, a wild tangling creek side plant, he wrote: “Earth's cultureless buds…” perhaps as a reference to their unruly, ungroomed nature - that little uncultured weed!
But stop! Cultureless as we intend it today, is not uncultured. It is the opposite.
So here’s what it is:
The best definition we could find of Cultureless was created by a Bot on Quora, on 17 August, 2024.
“Being Cultureless can be a complex and nuanced experience. Here are some key aspects to consider:
Identity and Belonging: Culture often provides a sense of identity and belonging. Without a cultural framework, individuals might struggle to find their place in society, leading to feelings of isolation or alienation.
Values and Norms: Culture shapes our values, beliefs, and behaviors. A lack of cultural influence may result in uncertainty about what is considered acceptable or meaningful, making it challenging to navigate social interactions.
Language and Communication: Language is a crucial aspect of culture. Without a cultural context, communication may be limited, leading to difficulties in expressing oneself and understanding others.
Traditions and Rituals: Many people find comfort and connection in cultural traditions. Without them, individuals might miss out on community celebrations, rites of passage, and shared histories that foster connection.
Exposure to Diversity: Being cultureless may limit exposure to diverse perspectives and ideas. This can hinder personal growth, creativity, and understanding of the world.
Potential for Freedom: On the flip side, lacking a specific cultural identity might allow for greater personal freedom to define one's beliefs and values without the constraints of traditional norms.
In summary, being cultureless can lead to feelings of disconnection and confusion, but it may also offer opportunities for individual exploration and self-definition. The experience can vary greatly depending on the individual's circumstances and environment.”

Our very own organic and evolving definition of Cultureless:
Cultureless is to be without one or multiple convincing internal cultural identities. A state of being over or hyper multicultured to the point of cultural identity confusion, disconnection and loss. It is post multi-culturalism, post globalisation, post postmodernism, post digital nomad and post covid.
It occurs when there has been over exposure and integration into multiple different cultures and adoption of multiple different cultural identities until not one single or even two cultural identities dominate. This results in the dilution of all internal and external cultural identity markers until they become confused and incomprehensible then unseen, unheard and unfelt, until they ultimately disappear. Without a dominant cultural identity, a part of self is lost which can become unsettling and cause mental and social disconnection. Many cultural behaviors and interactions can become fake performances in an attempt to assimilate to the externally expected cultural identity of said moment. Cultureless people can feel trapped in a culture they no longer identify with. It can be stressful, isolating and soul destroying. But it can also be something else…
The Cultureless newsletter is an attempt to give voice to this unspoken state of being. To lean into it. To celebrate it as a possible new cultural identity understood, accepted and normalized in globalized 2025. To explore if it does offer an opportunity to think, behave and speak freer, to transcend the boundaries of one dominant cultural identity. To empower ones culturelessness to create and do great, really great, things.
Are you Cultureless? If so, what does it look like for you?
